ABOUT SUMPTER

Sumpter lies in the heart of the Blue & Elkhorn Mts. Just 30 miles S.W. of Baker City Oregon, and 55 miles N.E. of the John Day valley. We are 3 miles off highway 7, on the Elkhorn Scenic Byway.

The Sumpter area has many things available for people to do.

Sumpter is the home of the Northwest largest Flea Market. Appox. 300 Dealers come to sell their goods. It draws into the town aprox. 5000 people that come to buy just about anything you can think of, from Antiques to the finest Grind of Coffee. You'll find that special little Memorabilia that Granny used to have. Maybe your looking for the latest in Gardening, Glassware, Collector's items, Arts and Crafts, Coins, Books, Furniture, T-Shirts, Horse Equipment and much more. You can eat your Heart out at one of the many Food Concessions or enjoy one of the year around Restaurants, or shop in the many different shops, it will be an experience and adventure you will always treasure.

While you are here you can ride the Old Narrow Gauge Steam Railroad, right now it runs on weekends only-Summer Months.

Sumpter is the home of the 1,250-Ton Gold Mining Dredge, it has recently been purchased by the State of Oregon for a State Park. Plans are to restore it to the original look when it ran in the 1930's to 1954.

The Blue & Elkhorn Mountains are very popular for Deer and Elk Hunting. Hunting Season is one of the busiest time for the town of Sumpter. The Blue Mountains is home for one of the largest herds of Elk in the Northwest.

Fishing in near by Phillips Lake, or any of the other nearby High Mt. Lakes is very popular for many people.

Sumpter is alive all winter long with some of the best Snowmobiling in the Northwest. We have aprox. 350 miles of Groomed Trails. Cross Country Skiers enjoy the trails along with the growing sport of Snow shoeing.
